Recently restored and tastefully renovated and decorated, Mas Maubec is a 17th century stone farmhouse, or mas, located on more than two hectares (approximately five acres) of land, nestled up against the rolling hills of the Parc National du Lubéron and surrounded by vineyards, olive trees, rosemary and lavender bushes and ancient oak and pine trees. Less than a mile from the charming village of Maubec, one of the Lubéron Valley’s lesser-known gems, the mas enjoys a very private location within a small gated community, yet provides an extremely convenient “home base” for touring the region.
After approaching the mas down a gravel driveway lined by trees and blooming plants, and guests enter the property through a wrought-iron gate which opens onto a sun-filled interior courtyard separating the living areas from the swimming pool and summer kitchen. The courtyard features a massive stone-block table and chairs…perfect for enjoying breakfast as the sun rises above the neighboring hillside. Just off the courtyard, there is an independent bedroom with a private entrance. This sunny bedroom is furnished with a queen bed and features tiled floors and authentic exposed-beam ceilings. There is also a private shower room, with American-style shower, washbasin and toilet, adjacent to this bedroom.
Through the main entry to the mas, guests encounter an ancient stone well, which adds a touch of history and charm. To the left of the entry lies the lovely salon, which combines traditional architectural elements, including exposed beam ceilings, tiled floors and a stone fireplace, with contemporary leather and glass furnishings. The home is also equipped with a flat-screen, cable television, stereo system with CD player. and wireless internet. The salon opens out to the pool and summer kitchen through paned French doors.
To the right of the entry lies the main living areas of the mas. The kitchen features quality stainless-steel appliances, including an oven, range, side-by-side refrigerator/freezer unit with icemaker, dishwasher, microwave and a full compliment of countertop appliances. A large dining table and chairs, with seating for ten, is conveniently located adjacent to the kitchen. The house also offers a washing machine and exterior drying area for laundry. French doors lead from the kitchen to a walled interior courtyard, where a large dining table easily accommodates up to ten…perfect for breakfast or lunch al fresco, as it enjoys full sun in the morning and a bit of shade in the afternoon. There is also a small toilet room located on the main level adjacent to the living areas.
There are three bedrooms on the upper level of the mas. The master, fitted with a queen bed and overlooking the pool area, has plenty of closet space, as well as an ensuite bathroom with a tub and hand-held shower and dual washbasins. An independent toilet room with washbasin is located in the hallway between the bedrooms.
A second bedroom, with queen bed and views over the vineyards, lies down the hall…with two additional twin beds on a mezzanine level, this bedroom is perfect for a couple with young children or for a cluster of four children. The third bedroom in the main house is fitted with two twins.
The large (10m x 5m) swimming pool is completely enclosed by fencing, a child-resistant security gate, and traditional dry-stone walls, giving families with young children a bit more peace of mind. Comfortable lounge chairs (enough for up to eight guests!) line the pool. A fully-equipped summer kitchen, with BBQ, refrigerator and rangetop, as well as an additional dining table and chairs, is adjacent to the pool, creating an irresistible outdoor living area that guests may find themselves unable to pull themselves away from! There are also play areas and children’s games on the rolling lawn area just beyond the gated pool, as well as paths and trails into the Parc to lure hiking enthusiasts into exploring the mas’extensive grounds.
Though not as famous as some of the more celebrated villages of the Lubéron Valley, Maubec is a delightful little village which is home to several excellent Côtes du Lubéron wineries and a wonderful Sunday morning market. Guests can walk into Maubec, as well as the neighboring medieval village, Oppede-le-Vieux, along a vineyard path which leads from the mas to each village. There are a few shops, boulangeries and cafés in each village. The bustling market village of Coustellet (what incredible produce!), with a wider selection of shops and restaurants, is a few kilometers further; the perched villages of Gordes, Roussillon and Bonnieux, considered to be among the prettiest villages of France, are within ten kilometers, and the walled city of Avignon is 20 kilometers to the west.
