L'Esprit d'Avignon

The ancient walled city, or vielle ville, of Avignon is the historic, cultural and artistic center of Provence, and this recently renovated apartment embodies the "spirit" of its setting, combining the best of modern conveniences and traditional architectural character. With two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a sunny terrace and a private garage, L'Esprit d'Avignon is the perfect home-base for experiencing the vibrant city and for exploring the vineyards, markets and villages of the surrounding region.

The apartment is located on a quiet street in a residential neighborhood "within the walls," just steps from boulangeries, cafés, restaurants and galleries, and within a few minutes' walk from the famous Place d'Horloge at the heart of the city. The living areas are on the second floor (one above street level), and are filled with light from large windows on three sides of the apartment. From the welcoming entry, with its patterned tile floors, guests enter into the spacious salon, furnished with a large sofa, comfortable armchairs and featuring a wood-burning fireplace; the adjacent dining area offers seating for eight. The salon is also fitted with a satellite/cable television, CD music system, DVD player and a high-speed broadband internet connection.

The kitchen is modern and fully equipped, with stainless steel appliances (including a four-burner gas range, oven, dishwasher, microwave and refrigerator/freezer) and a full compliment of pots, pans, small appliances, dishes and glassware.  A cozy dining corner in the kitchen provides an intimate spot for enjoying morning croissants and café au lait, or dine al fresco on the charming and partially shaded patio, with its dining table for six and BBQ grill.

There are two well-sized bedrooms, one which, depending on guests’ preference, can be fitted with two twin beds or a true (180 cm) king-sized bed, and the second with a queen bed.  The  master (queen) bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, with tub, a “real” shower, toilet and washbasin, as well as lovely views over the leafy trees beyond the French windows.  The second bedroom features a walk-in dressing room; the second bathroom is fitted with a shower, washbasin and toilet.

In addition to providing secure, off-street parking for one full-sized car, the private garage houses a new washing machine, tumble dryer, sink and a third toilet.  The apartment is centrally heated, making it a wonderful choice year-round.

Once the home of the Vatican during a period of estrangement between the popes and the Italian monarchy, the historic and architecturally impressive walled city of Avignon, with its arched entrances and ramparts, winding cobblestone streets and views across the Rhône River (and, of course, that eponymous bridge of nursery-rhyme fame) is now home to a world-famous theatre festival held each July, as well as an extensive selection of galleries, year-round theatres, museums, markets and restaurants.  The location, at the intersection of the Rhône and Durance Rivers, provides easy access to vineyards, villages and sites of the Bouches du Rhône and Vaucluse departements of Provence, as well as to the autoroute linking the Drôme to the north and the Var to the south.
