Les Murs

Located on a quiet pedestrian street within the walls of the medieval city of Uzés, which itself lies at the intersection of the Gard, Bouches du Rhône and Vaucluse departments of Provence, Les Murs is a beautiful, 17th century hotel particulier (or intown château) originally built for the first Ambassador of the Duchy of Uzès. Since then, this beautiful village townhouse, which retains the incredible architectural elements which characterize the noble residences of the era while incorporating all of the modern conveniences and amenities required by the discriminating 21st century traveler, has evolved into an extraordinary vacation property which will be well-appreciated by guests seeking the best of traditional ambiance and modern comfort with a prime Provençal location.

With approximately 2,200 square feet of living area distributed over three levels, Les Murs is a spacious and elegantly appointed property, providing guests the best of historic architectural elements complimented by high-quality modern fixtures and appointments and elegant, though very comfortable, furnishings and decorative accents.

In the gorgeous kitchen, with its arched ceilings, elegant chandelier and beautiful paned windows, traditional architectural elements (including a wood-burning fireplace and pizza oven) provide a striking contrast to the full compliment of modern appliances, updated cabinetry and tiled countertops. The laundry room adjacent to the kitchen houses a new washing machine and separate tumble dryer.

The kitchen is fitted with an informal dining area, perfect for morning coffee and croissants. French doors lead from the kitchen to the sunny, enclosed patio, which is also accessed from the formal dining and living areas. The patio runs the length of the main level, providing a tranquil and thoroughly quiet oasis within the walls of the very lively village of Uzés. In season, trailing vines climb the ancient stone walls, while pots filled with blooming plants provide colorful accents.

The spacious living and dining areas, which also open onto the tranquil patio area, are equally well-suited for relaxation or entertaining in the true Provençal manner. In all, Les Murs offers an amazing blend of historic ambiance, open and airy space, private tranquility, and modern comfort at a remarkably affordable price.

High ceilings and oversized French windows and doors give Les Murs an airy and open character; authentic tiled floors, exposed stone walls and ceiling treatments and ornate, wood-burning fireplaces give this beautiful townhouse a yesteryear character that will make you feel as though you are living in an elegant historical era when Provence was the most sought-after address of the French aristocracy.

Les Murs boasts three private bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Two of the bedrooms, each fitted with a king-sized bed, are located on the main level; the third bedroom, fitted with two twin beds, is located on the second level. With its very comfortable queen-sized sofa bed in the main-level living room, Les Murs can easily accommodate six to eight guess.

In addition to the three full bathrooms adjacent to the bedrooms, a small "powder room," with a charming tiled sink and toilet, is conveniently located near the living areas on the main level of the townhouse.

Just a few steps from the house, with its cobblestone streets, arched passageways and beautiful tree-lined courtyards, lies a broad selection of restaurants, art galleries, trendy boutiques and small shops featuring locally produced crafts and artwork. The local market, held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, draws locals and tourists alike to the hundreds of stalls set up by itinerant vendors and regional craftsmen proudly offering the best of Provençal produce, gifts, and brocante (that thoroughly French hybrid between antique and junk).

Die-hard shoppers will be thrilled by the endless art galleries, antiques shops and upscale boutiques within the village's walls; sports enthusiasts will find opportunities for kayaking, hiking, cycling and canoeing within a few minutes from the village ramparts.

The ancient Pont du Gard, as well as some of the region's most celebrated vineyards and wine estates, are within a ten to 15 minute drive from Les Murs; the heart of Languedoc's gourmet and enological hubs, as well as the Roman ruins and medieval villages of the Vaucluse and Bouches du Rhône, are within an easy daytrip from Uzès and Les Murs.
