Le St. Paul

The Marais district, which spans Paris' third and fourth arrondissements, is a unique quartier originally reclaimed to provide building space for the rapidly expanding Right Bank. Nearby, the famous Place des Vosges was built by Henri IV at the beginning of the 17th century, when the city's most renowned architects and sculptors designed elegant mansions and hôtel particuliers with large courtyards and rear gardens for residents of the district.

Recently declared a historic neighborhood, the area is now the city's center of fashionable living, with trendy boutiques, cafés, and museums within walking distance of the apartment. Despite extensive renovations throughout the neighborhood, the narrow streets throughout the district retain the character of the medieval village Le Marais once was.

Located on the second floor (no elevator, but not a difficult ascent for guests in reasonably good shape) of a well-maintained building on a quiet street in the heart of the Marais, le St. Paul, which was completely renovated in 2001, can accommodate up to six guests (although we think it is perfect for two couples traveling together or for a family of four).

In the spacious living area, which looks out over the quiet rue St. Paul, the tasteful decor features authentic exposed ceiling beams, traditional tommette tiled flooring, lovely antiques and quality modern pieces. A TV, stereo, DSL internet access and telephone (with free local calls) provide modern conveniences. The dining area, adjacent to the living room, comfortably accommodates six to eight diners. Although there are numerous restaurants, bistros and cafés in the neighborhood, you may find yourself inspired to dine in (or even to entertain!) by the welcoming living and dining areas within this charming apartment.

The compact kitchen, with its wooden countertops and contemporary cabinetry, has an electric stove, multifunction microwave/convection oven, and refrigerator with freezer. It is fully equipped, with electric coffeepot, dishes, cutlery, and washer/dryer.

The full bathroom, with its beautiful marble tiles, has a bathtub (with hand-held shower), washbasin and linen cupboard. An independent toilet room with an additional washbasin provides the convenience of a "powder room."

The master bedroom has a queen bed; the second bedroom has two singles which can be combined to create another large bed for two. A very comfortable, queen-size sofa bed in the living room can accommodate two additional guests.

The Hotel de Ville, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Bastille, Ile St Louis and the Place des Vosges are within walking distance from the apartment, as is the convenient St. Paul metro stop. Rue St. Paul is lined with antique shops, specialty markets and boutiques. An incredible boulangerie is located right next door to the apartment...just imagine waking up to the alluring scent of freshly-baked croissants!

From the front windows of this second floor apartment, you can enjoy the daily sites of a typical Parisian neighborhood. With its tree-lined streets, corner cafes and neighborhood shops, the centrally located, yet surprisingly tranquil, Marais district is perfect for travelers wanting to be close to the "heart" of Paris, yet still
